The Story Behind the Mission

Two Worlds, One Mission

What makes Howie-AI different is Howie himself. He has built and run a technology company, experienced addiction and recovery personally, trained in counselling, and studied AI in Business. That combination is genuinely unique.

The Beginning

Before addiction took over, Howie Atkin was an entrepreneur. He built and ran a successful AR/VR (augmented and virtual reality) technology business — the kind of work that required deep technical fluency, commercial acumen, and relentless execution.

Then addiction took over.

Howie's addiction story is not a gentle one. It involved the destruction of the business, relationships, and the version of himself he had spent years building. He has spoken honestly about the brutality of dependency — not as a cautionary tale, but as the foundation of everything Howie-AI exists to do.

Recovery & Clarity

Recovery didn't happen in a straight line. It involved treatment, counselling, community, and eventually, something unexpected: clarity.

In recovery, Howie made a decision that would define the next chapter. He returned to education — completing a Level 3 qualification in AI in Business. He graduated top of his class.

This wasn't just about getting a qualification. It was about proving something to himself, and about understanding the tools that could actually change the system he had lived through.

Why He Built This

The addiction support system is broken. Not because the people in it don't care — they do, deeply. But a decade of cuts destroyed the specialist workforce. Waiting lists are months long. Services don't exist in many areas. Language barriers lock out entire communities. And the organisations trying to help — councils, charities, private providers — are doing it with inadequate tools and impossible demands.

Howie built Howie-AI because he saw exactly where AI could close those gaps. Not as a replacement for human care, but as the thing that makes human care possible at scale: the 3am conversation when no keyworker is available, the SROI report that wins the next funding round, the knowledge base that stops every new staff member starting from zero.

He also built it knowing that addiction is just where this starts. Every lesson learned here — the compliance architecture, the multilingual capability, the RAG pipelines, the SROI frameworks — applies to every complex, data-rich public service challenge in the UK.

The Journey

Not a timeline. A path — with everything that entails.

Addiction was a thread woven through the entire journey — not a chapter that started and stopped

Chapter One

The Entrepreneur

Built and ran a successful AR/VR technology business. Technical fluency, commercial acumen, relentless drive. Success on the outside.

Addiction was already present — quietly, beneath the surface.

Chapter Two

The Unravelling

What had been hidden became impossible to ignore. The business collapsed. Relationships fell apart. The version of himself he had spent years building was destroyed.

Addiction had been there all along — it just became everything.

Chapter Three

Rock Bottom

The lowest point. The place where there was nowhere left to go but forward — or not at all. The moment that made everything that followed possible.

This is where the real journey began.

Chapter Four

Recovery

Treatment. Counselling. Community. Honesty — with himself and others. Recovery didn't happen in a straight line. It never does. But it happened.

Addiction does not disappear — you learn to live differently.

Chapter Five

Self Actualisation

Clarity arrived. Not all at once — in pieces. Integrity replaced performance. Honesty replaced appearance. Values became something real, not aspirational. Hope stopped being abstract and became a direction. Purpose arrived — not as ambition, but as responsibility.

Chapter Six

Howie-AI

Returned to education. Counselling training. Level 3 AI in Business — top of the class. Everything converged: the technical mind, the commercial experience, the lived reality, the clinical awareness. Built the company nobody else was positioned to build.
